The US is looking at DeepSeek with suspicion, as they suspect that the Chinese startup violated US law.

The US authorities are investigating whether Chinese startup DeepSeek bought advanced Nvidia semiconductors through intermediaries in Singapore, circumventing US export restrictions. These chips could be used to develop artificial intelligence (AI). This was reported by Bloomberg.

DeepSeek has created new challenges for the AI market.

The DeepSeek chatbot, which is as good as its American counterparts in many respects, has caused concern among competitors. Some engineers were impressed by its capabilities, and the tool’s low cost and efficiency prompted speculation that it was created with the help of Western technologies.

The FBI and White House officials are trying to find out whether DeepSeek used intermediaries in Southeast Asia to purchase Nvidia chips that are banned from being sold to China.

In turn, a Nvidia spokesperson said that the company complies with all applicable laws.

Earlier, Nvidia issued a statement saying that there was no evidence of violations by DeepSeek. However, Howard Luthnick, appointed by Donald Trump to head the Department of Commerce, said on January 29 that DeepSeek may have evaded US export controls.

How does a Chinese startup affect global competition?

In January, DeepSeek unveiled a new open-source AI model called R1, a significant step in the fight against the dominance of giants like OpenAI, Google, and Meta Platforms. However, DeepSeek’s success has raised cybersecurity concerns.

Microsoft experts reported that individuals who may be affiliated with DeepSeek were extracting large amounts of data through the OpenAI API. Microsoft and OpenAI are currently investigating this information.

In addition, the US Congress warned employees about the dangers of using the Chinese chatbot DeepSeek. The reason is that attackers can use it to infect devices or gain unauthorized access to data.

Earlier, it was reported that Poles were urged to refuse from Tesla cars.
